Professor Jeong-yeop Shin of the Department of Library and Information Science at Incheon National University and Kang Seong-min received the Grand Prize at the 2025 Presidential Records Utilization Outstanding Paper Competition, hosted by the Presidential Archives of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, on November 27, for their study titled “A Reorganization Strategy for Presidential Inauguration Records: Application and Reproduction of the Joseon Dynasty Uigwe Format.”
This study is significant in that it modernly reinterprets the record-keeping methods of state rituals documented in Joseon Dynasty Uigwe and systematically reorganizes records of presidential inauguration ceremonies. Focusing on the Daerye Uigwe, which documents the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Gojong, the researchers analyzed the structure and content of Uigwe and derived key characteristics of its documentation style, including factual accuracy, narrative coherence, accountability, and on-site authenticity. While reproducing the traditional recording approach of Uigwe, the study applied modern business process analysis methods and international archival description standards (ISAD(G)) to structure presidential inauguration records by function and hierarchy.
Professor Jeong-yeop Shin stated, “A presidential inauguration ceremony is a symbolic national ritual that marks the beginning of a new administration, and the records produced at that time constitute historical documentary heritage. This research is meaningful in terms of restoring and inheriting Korea’s outstanding traditional record culture, as well as advancing the documentation and integrated management of national events.”
The Presidential Archives of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety hosts the Presidential Records Utilization Outstanding Paper Competition annually to enhance the academic value of presidential records and promote research across diverse fields. This year, a total of five papers were selected.
